About

Perched on a rocky hillside in central Naxos, Kinidaros is a picturesque village renowned for its rich musical heritage and vibrant community life. Whitewashed houses gleam under the sun, nestled amid lush greenery and ancient marble quarries. Visitors can explore local tavernas, hike scenic trails, and experience lively festivals. Fun fact: in Kinidaros, it's said that children learn to dance before they can walk, reflecting the village's deep-rooted love for music and dance.

Kinidaros, located approximately 15 kilometers from Naxos Town at an altitude of 400 meters, boasts a population of around 400 residents. The village is surrounded by olive, plane, and oak trees, and is adjacent to the island's renowned marble quarries. These quarries produce the famous "Crystallina" marble, known for its unique crystal transparency. The village's rich cultural heritage is evident in its musical and dance traditions, having produced many famous Greek musicians and singers of folklore island music. The central square, shaded by ancient plane trees, serves as a gathering spot for locals and visitors alike. Notable landmarks include the 18th-century church of Agios Artemios, located in the area of Halandra, the village's original site before pirate raids forced relocation in the 15th century. For hiking enthusiasts, a trail from Kinidaros to Eggares offers a scenic route along riverbanks, featuring small waterfalls, wildlife, and remnants of old watermills. The best time to visit is during the summer months when the village hosts music concerts and dance festivities, attracting visitors who dance until the early morning hours.
