Frederik's Church

Commissioned by King Frederik V in 1749, it was originally designed by Nicolai Eigtved and meant to be built entirely of marble. Its grand green-copper dome spans **31 meters** — the largest church dome in Scandinavia — and rests on twelve majestic columns. After long delays, financial struggles, and decades as an overgrown ruin, the church was finally completed in 1894 thanks to the industrialist C.F. Tietgen and architect Ferdinand Meldahl. The exterior is adorned with 14 bronze statues of important Danish church figures and 18 zinc statues around the dome gallery, including prophets and apostles. Inside, the circular nave soars with frescoes of the twelve apostles and a richly carved altar framed in Baroque style.
